Mathematics Development
Children have some awareness of quantity in the first year of life.
Mathematics at Different Age levels
Infancy (0-2 years old)
- Some awareness that adding or subtracting something affects quantity (appears at around 5 months)
-Discrimination between sequences that show increases versus decreases in amount
Early Childhood (2-6 years old)-
-Clear understanding that adding objects results in an increase and removing objects results in decrease (2 1/2 or 3)
-Appearance in counting around 3
-Increasing ability to count correctly (perhaps till 50 by age of 5 )
-Some familiarity with division in everyday sharing tasks
Middle childhood
Increasing ability to count correctly into the hundreds and beyond
Acquisitions of more efficient addition and subtraction strategies, including retrieval of number facts
-Growing understanding of place value and its relevance to carrying and borrowing
-Some understanding of simple fraction
-Increasing ability to solve word problems.
Promoting Development of Mathematics
- Teach number and counting in Preschool and Primary grades
- At all age levels use manipulative and visual displays to tie mathematical concepts
-Encourage children to invent and use their own strategies
