Writing Development
Below you will find age related trends that occur as children gain experience in writing ~
Early Childhood
- 18 months (sometimes earlier) toddlers can hold a pencil/crayon and scribble -Preschool years (increase motor coordiantion) better control hand movements and draw recognizable shapes -4 years old, you can now recognoze their drawing from writing (wavy lines, connected hoops) -By 5, they can incorporate letters and letter like forms |
Middle Childhood and Adolescence
-They learn to master handwriting, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation -Progress grows from experiences through elementary , middle and high school |
Becoming a skillful writer means children not only master handwriting and spelling but also discover how to communicate their thoughts clearly.

Promoting Writing Development
-Provide tools for drawing and writing as soon as children are old enough to use. This will help them to explore and discover what they can do with pencils, markers, crayons!
